Glass beads and pendants are my new craft. Unfortunately, they are so small I had trouble getting them into focus.

Overly Talkative Student
I need to read about 100 pages of developmental psychology before tomorrow AM, but I have to stay on campus because of a late afternoon lecture. So I find a quiet spot outside and try to get some reading done before my class. Almost immediately I'm accosted by Overly Talkative Student. OTS was a student in one of my discussions last quarter. He talked so much that it became a problem in discussion because other students were giggling every time he spoke. Frequently he kept me talking after discussion for 15-30 minutes and would walk with me to my car, continuing to talk. So my last hour was a complete waste of time. I tried to disentangle myself, but he just won't take a hint. Now I know why professors hide in their offices with the doors locked!

forcast: stormy
Things have been stormy lately. Even once the moving was over I didn't really feel up to blogging. Since my car broke down during the move and was subsequently broken into, we seem to be minus one laptop computer, one pda, and one digital camera. I had no idea that those things were in the car.
So I can't post my latest crafty exploits. Last night I participated in a workshop on how to make jewelry out of borositicate glass. To see some cool examples of this craft, check out JellyFish Glass. My first experiments were not highly successful, but glass is very appealing because you get to work with fire and its easy to complete a project in a short amount of time. I love crafts that involve flames! I want to learn welding. I mean what could be more empowering than building things out of metal!
What other stormy happenings have been highjacking my attempts to blog? Wait, can stormy weather highjack things? Well Beorn and I have been bickering over any number of household issues. We were so busy fighting on Monday that somehow Beorn dropped his cell phone on the street. This morning in an attempt to find the phone, he called it from our home phone. The genius on the other end of the line had taken it to LA and was completely unapologetic. I personally wouldn't consider a cell phone worth stealing because most peope already have their own cell phones and the person you steal it from is just going to cancel it as soon as they realize that it has been stolen.
Today I managed to read the completely wrong seventy pages for my seminar. I have special disorganization talents!

New Adventures
My long absence is hopefully over. Over the Christmas break we moved into a new place. Moving is always quite stressful and since we spent the whole break on it the new quarter has now started and I'm already exhausted. Our new place is a "cohousing" community so other people cook for us sometimes. I'm so excited!
I have also been meaning to post some of my recent crafting successes. I finally finished the baby blanket I have been knitting and got some pottery out of the kiln. Unfortunately, I don't know what's happened to the digital camera during the move. So until a few more boxes get unpacked my blogging is going to limited.

Glory! Glory!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The grading is finally done! I wish I could share some of the more ridiculous papers with you all, but the amusing ones are very distinctive.
Update: I think I can share this without trouble. The final project for my students was to propose a "landscape intervention" and support the proposal with references to the readings. This allowed students to be creative and write about many different types of changes they would like to see in the world. There were a number of selfish, shallow proposals and many creative, compassionate ones. There was also one student who decided to propose that our university should build a new stadium for the football team. Guess what? The university IS building a stadium on the very spot she suggested in her paper! The professor decided not to disipline her, but I think it would have been fair to flunk her. Thoughts?
Update: I emailed the stadium student about her paper and her grade. She had the nerve to write back that she shouldn't be "penalized" because it is common knowledge that the University is building a stadium. (Never mind the fact that no where in her paper did she mention that the university was already building it.) I am growing to hate the word "penalize."

female academics do the housework
I had a conversation with my advisor the other day. She was discussing the process of hiring new faculty, which they are about to do. She mentioned how she and the other female prof in the department are tired of having to do all the administrative work. Apparently none of the male faculty do anything to help with the running of the department. The ironic thing about this is that the women, who do this extra work don't get extra pay for this, instead they are turned down for raises because they aren't as prolific in publishing. What kind of justice is that? Has anyone else noticed this in other academic departments?
