Government Job Applications

Ever applied for a government job? Couldn't they just look at my resume first? Seriously, why do they need to know where I went to high school? And why make a web form that involves me filling out numerous separate fields for each job I have ever had? That would be fine if I only had to do it once, but it looks like I will have to do it over and over for each job I want to apply for. It means an hour+ for each job.

Its a security thing, they want to check your background to make sure you're not a terrorist.

Sure, but does my having gone to high school in the U.S. really assure them that I'm not a terrorist?

It lets them call to make sure that you are who you say you are, and in case they do need to investigate you they can go through the records and track down people who knew you. Then, they can interview them about what kind of person you were in HS.

Ok, ok, I understand, but I'm not applying for federal or state jobs. Do city governments really have to do that kind of background checking on people? Besides, I might have gone quietly insane since then and be plotting to overthrow them and secede from the union.

Hmm, I've only worked federal jobs. I guess it depends on the position.
